Wildlife Art Insect, Nature, Butterfly "PEACOCK BUTTERFLY" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Peacock Butterfly is common in Europe and is easily identified by the large eyespots on the hind wings. The eyespots are designed to startle or confuse would be predators into thinking it is a much larger animal. If the predator does take a bite, it is usually directed towards the eyespot. The delicate wings may tear or get damaged during the attack but it allows the butterfly to break free and flee for its life.

Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. The original has been sold but is available in 3 sizes of fine art reproduction canvas prints. Please look through the rest of the gallery to see other images from the series. The Madagascan Sunset Moth looks like a butterfly because of its beautiful iridescent colors but it is classified in the scientific world as a moth. Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. There is nothing that captures my eye than a scampering iridescent beetle across the forest floor. This is one of the largest ground beetles in the USA that is iridescent...It is called the Fiery Searcher AKA....Caterpillar Hunter! As it's name implies it feasts on caterpillars. This painting combines, colored pencil and watercolor pencils. It is part of my online class- Experimenting with Colored Pencils.

The Regal Walnut Moth has the most stunning caterpillar called the Hickory Horned Devil. The caterpillar can be as long as 8 inches and comes in different colors: a brown version and a green version. It pupates underground by burrowing into the dirt. The host plant is the Black Walnut Tree. I was able to raise these moths when I lived in New Jersey. They were super COOL!
