The Zebra Swallowtail, Eurytides marcellus has triangular wings with long tails. It has distinctive black and white markings on its wings and some small red and blue markings on both bottom corners of the wings. There are two seasonal forms. Spring forms have more white and have small black tails with white tips. Summer forms have more black and have longer tails with more white in them. This butterfly uses the PawPaw trees as its host plant.

Wildlife Art Insect, Nature "MADAGASCAN SUNSET MOTH" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Madagascan Sunset Moth looks like a butterfly because of its beautiful iridescent colors but it is classified in the scientific world as a moth. Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. The original has been sold but is available in 3 sizes of fine art reproduction canvas prints. Please look through the rest of the gallery to see other images from the series. The Atlas Moth,  Attacus atlas is considered to be the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area. Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, from 10-12 inches. Females are appreciably larger and heavier. The triangular marking on each wing is transparent.

The Green Heron is one of my favorite birds to spot on the river while I am kayaking here in Florida. They often can be spotted along the shore or wading in the water fishing. They are much smaller than their relatives the Great Blue Heron but I think they are much prettier. This is a black & white hand-pulled solar etching. I have also done one that is hand colored after the printmaking process. You can message me if you are interested in a color rendition.

The Atala Butterfly, Eumaeus atala, once thought to be extinct, is native to Florida. The host plant is the Florida coontie (Zamia floridana), which is a cycad, or "living fossil," The Atala can tolerate the natural toxins in coonties and uses the accumulated toxins and its brilliant coloration as a defense against bird predators. The female lays her eggs, five to fifteen, usually, on coontie stalks The butterfly emerges in the early morning, courts and mates in the late afternoon, and dies within ten days.

Purple is my favorite color. When I saw this beautiful double trumpet Datura I knew I would have to have it in my garden! Every year it grows and drops its seeds. Any burst of cold weather in Florida will kill the plant but the wonderful seed heads burst open and the plant rejuvenates itself. It is breath taking and easy to grow!

This iguana painting is not a painting of just any iguana, but my rescued iguana, named Father Mulcahy! Father M came to live with me after he got too big for his aquarium. He was over 4 feet long and loved to be part of the family. I had a house full of rescue cats and he fit right in. He loved to chase the cats throughout the house and bask in the sun on top of the cat condo. He was a sweet and intelligent animal that responded to human touch and loved to watch television.... his favorite show was M*A*S*H! When he passed away I was heartbroken and painted his portrait to show how gentle and beautiful he was. The painting was included in Splash 15 by North Light Books. The original painting is available as well as canvas prints

The Aracari is a member of the Toucan Family. It is a smaller bird and is found in Central and South America. They love to eat palm nuts! I had the wonderful experience of watching this bird "pop" these palm nuts into its mouth as if it were popcorn!
