The Regal Walnut Moth has the most stunning caterpillar called the Hickory Horned Devil. The caterpillar can be as long as 8 inches and comes in different colors: a brown version and a green version. It pupates underground by burrowing into the dirt. The host plant is the Black Walnut Tree. I was able to raise these moths when I lived in New Jersey. They were super COOL! Torch Ginger and Malachite Butterfly
This huge waxy flower stands 3-4 feet off the ground which is why the common name is the The Torch Ginger. The Scientific name is : Etlingera elatior and it belongs to the Family: Zingiberaceae (ginger)
The Butterfly is commonly known as the Malachite and the scientific name is Siproeta stelenes. It is a neotropical brush-footed butterfly. Brush-footed butterflies only have 4 visible legs.
There are 2 smaller, almost microscopic legs located under the head located at the top of the thorax. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings.
