Cyclommatus elaphus is the Latin name for this male stag beetle. The very large impressive mandibles look like they could some serious damage. They actually are fairly harmless unless you happen to be another male stag beetle looking to hone in on its territory!

There is nothing that captures my eye than a scampering iridescent beetle across the forest floor. This is one of the largest ground beetles in the USA that is iridescent...It is called the Fiery Searcher AKA....Caterpillar Hunter! As it's name implies it feasts on caterpillars. This painting combines, colored pencil and watercolor pencils. It is part of my online class- Experimenting with Colored Pencils.

The Great Blue Heron is a common wading bird throughout the USA. It is super common here where I live in Florida. This juvenile was making all kinds of noises at the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. He kept opening his mouth and ruffling his head feathers. He was a quawky teenager with a mohawk! He was a successful hunter and caught a fish while I watched. The Regal Walnut Moth has the most stunning caterpillar called the Hickory Horned Devil. The caterpillar can be as long as 8 inches and comes in different colors: a brown version and a green version. It pupates underground by burrowing into the dirt. The host plant is the Black Walnut Tree. I was able to raise these moths when I lived in New Jersey. They were super COOL! This listing is for an original watercolor. It is on Fabriano 300 lb watercolor paper.

The Bat Falcon (Falco rufigularis) is a fairly small raptor found in the tropical lowlands of Central America. It gets its name from hunting bats. This Bat Falcon is a permanent resident at the Toucan Rescue Ranch in Costa Rica. The flacon lost his wing and no longer has the ability to fly. Although I feel awful he is living captivity he certainly would have died in the wild. It gave me a chance to see him up close and personal. He is extrodinary to say the least! It is an edition of 25 and the colors may vary as each are handpainted.

Printmaking on Paper, Original Art "LETTUCE INTAGLIO" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

This print is an Artist's Proof of an Intaglio Plate. I drew the image of the lettuce onto the copper plate with a sharp stylus and then placed it in a vat of acid to further etch the image deeper into the plate. It was hand inked and pulled through a traditional press, also by hand.
